HOUSTON (May 17, 2016) – Excalibur Exhibits, a Houston-based full service tradeshow and event marketing firm, was honored today as one of 2015’s top 25 women owned businesses in conjunction with the Houston Business Journal’s inaugural Women Who Mean Business event. The event recognizes female business leaders in nonprofit and for-profit categories, as well as a category called Women to Watch.
Founded by Peggy Swords in 1997, Excalibur Exhibits has grown to a full-service exhibit house that serves clients locally and globally.
“The number of women-owned businesses has kept pace with Houston’s continuing growth. We’re thrilled to be one of the fastest-growing ones in such a large, diverse and thriving city,” said Swords, president of Excalibur Exhibits. “We’ve grown steadily as we’re finding new and innovative solutions for our clients and remaining on top of all the latest industry trends.”
The year she started Excalibur Exhibits, the company was only one of three women-owned display builder companies in the U.S. Today, there are fewer than 10 U.S. women-owned display builder companies—a significant accomplishment in a male-dominated industry.
Swords has demonstrated strong business acumen from the beginning despite market conditions. Because of a non-compete agreement, Excalibur Exhibits could not commence it`s own fabrication work until 2001. And then, because of the impact of 9-11, the company was hit with the cancellation of its entire Q4 book of business. Yet, Swords has continued to make sound business decisions in meeting the demands of the cyclical energy industry, which continues to comprise its largest business sector.
She has grown the company into an award-winning designer, builder and program manager of custom, modular and portable exhibits. Today, Excalibur Exhibits offers portable and rental exhibit options, including pop-up booths, tabletop displays, banner stands and accessories. Because of her vision, the company also provides global tradeshow strategy and consulting, onsite show management and tradeshow program management. Additionally, Excalibur Exhibits assists clients with booth refurbishment, installation and dismantling, storage and shipping.
In previous years, Swords had been traveling internationally five months a year in order to grow her business. Then, in 2014, she decided to curtail the travel in order to involve the company in more community activities.
She is an Exhibit Designer and Producers Association (EDPA) Foundation founding grantor and has served on the Art with Heart Gala committee of the San Jose Clinic. Additionally, Peggy led the effort for Excalibur Exhibits to donate the fabrication of more than 100 tables for competing teams in the All-Earth EcoBot Challenge, an innovative engineering competition that engages 5th through 8th grade students in complex problem-solving challenges and introduces advanced physics and math concepts through creative learning.
Additionally, Swords has volunteered as a mentor for the Houston Business Journal’s Bizwomen Mentoring Monday program for the last two years. The annual event pairs Houston businesswomen with 40 professional businesswomen mentors for one-on-one coaching sessions.
Swords and Excalibur Exhibits are members of the prestigious Octanorm Service Partner International (OSPI), which requires the company to pass a nomination and financial vetting process. OSPI is comprised of more than 150 companies in 56 countries.
